GLOW – The Art of Outdoor Lighting

For 60 years, the South Coast Botanic Gardens mission has been to serve the community by providing a unique horticultural and wildlife habitat experience. With hundreds of thousands of plant specimens, it truly is a beautiful urban oasis slapped right in the middle of a mega-metropolitan area.

This past holiday season and for the first time in their long history, the garden hosted a nighttime art exhibition. Featuring their gorgeous collection of trees and plants in a new light.  After months and months of planning and hard work, GLOW (Garden Lights and Ocean Waters) opened to the public on November 21st, 2020.

Our team at California Outdoor Lighting was extremely excited for the opportunity to design and install this amazing exhibit. But planning an experience for people to walk through during a pandemic was challenging to say the least. We needed to craft an exhibit that flowed through the garden, just like a current.

From start to finish, GLOW was created to immerse your senses of sight and sound with beautiful color and feel good tunes. With 96% of the available tickets sold, our local Los Angeles community absolutely loved the exhibit! It was great to personally see and hear the reactions of so many happy individuals. To see dads and moms dance with their kids and couples of all ages embrace while strolling through gave me the feels, night after night. For at least that moment, people seemed to forget about the pandemic and really enjoy themselves.

It was nice to just look around and see rainbows of color everywhere, there were so many different parts of the exhibit, each with their own little something special. From the banyan grove rainstorm to the coral reef cactus garden, there were lots of different favorites. There were so many Instagram-able and for months, thousands and thousands of posts were made all over social media. The fireflies at the living wall was definitely a popular place where thousands of memories were created.

We are so happy to have had the opportunity to design and install such an interesting display and are looking forward to doing it again this year! Keep checking back to see some of the new things we will be working on for 2021!
